| As a graduate student, serving as a graduate teaching assistant, or TA, is an excellent experience that will typically provide you with an income, free tuition, and other benefits. First, it is important to understand what a TA position entails at your graduate school. Duties are different from program to program, and they also vary depending on your department. As a TA, you'll be assisting a professor with his or her teaching duties, grading, office hours, and other aspects of running an undergraduate course. While some TA positions involve mostly preparatory work or grading responsibilities, others actively involve the graduate student in course instruction. You should be willing to meet whatever challenges your particular TA position brings.
If you are expected to do a lot of teaching as a TA, you may be a bit nervous about these duties. Confidence is a must if you wish to win the respect of your students and gain valuable exposure to teaching that can be useful in your later career.
